Rule 1: Eligibility
Article 1: Players
Participants must be a currently enrolled, fee-paying U of A student, full-time faculty or staff member. A valid Action card will be needed to enter the playing facility and must be presented to staff at sign-in.
Rule 2: Rules of Play
Article 1: Start of Match
A coin toss will be used to determine the server or receiver and side of the court. Server must wait till the receiver signals that they are ready before serving the ball. Server shall alternate between left and right courts. Server will begin behind the right court.
Article 2: Scoring
A match will consist of an 8-game Pro-Set. Each game will consist of “Advantage” scoring. Players will rotate sides on every alternating game of each set. Gentleman’s Rules apply. Note: If the situation cannot be resolved the point will be replayed.
Article 3: Score Reporting
It will be the responsibility of the winning participant to turn the scores into the Intramural office by the play-by date.
Rule 3: Game Times and Reservations
Article 1: Game Times
The Intramural Sports Department will not schedule times for the matches to be played. Participants must play the match and turn in their scorecard into the Intramural office by the play-by date. The play-by dates will be included on the league schedule.
Article 2: Reservations
Participants are encouraged to reserve times to play their matches. Outdoor courts can be reserved at no cost.
Article 3: Rain Outs
Matches will only be rained out if the court manager closes the courts. If your match gets rained out and the participant cannot play the match before the play-by date the participant should contact the Intramural office to avoid disqualification.
Rule 4: Equipment
Article 1: Equipment
Players will be required to provide their own racket(s) and balls to their match. Only non-marked athletic shoes will be permitted on the court.
Rule 5: Tournament Format
Article 1: General
Tennis singles will be a double-elimination tournament. The total number of matches required to win the tournament will depend on the number of entries.
Rule 6: Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is an important part of intramural sports. Any player who uses foul language, violently protests a call, or curses an official or staff member, will be removed from the game and will automatically be suspended from his/her team's next game. In addition, he/she will have to meet with the Coordinator of Intramural Sports during office hours (Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) before he/she is eligible to participate again. Any player who touches an official or staff member will be placed on suspension from all Intramural activities for a minimum period of one calendar year from the time of the incident.
