Become a Lifeguard!  Impact Your Community!

Lifeguarding is a serious and important undertaking.  Although much of Lifeguarding involves scanning the same area with little change, at any moment a guard may have to jump into action, quickly and efficiently, to save a life.  Lifeguarding is a demanding task, requiring responsible, caring, and capable people who have been well trained in their duties.

Lifeguarding, 2007 edtion is the American Red Cross’s lifeguard training course manual.  It offers up-to-date information on how to guard, anticipating and preventing problems before they occur, and taking action when necessary.  The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.  The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries.  Successful completion can lead to part time jobs and career opportunities with community service organizations.

Course Prerequisites:
Minimum Age:

  1. 15 years of age before the end of the course.  (Proof of age required.)  Students under the age of 18 must have parental consent.

Swimming Skills Check: Successfully complete the following at the first class session:

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously utilizing the front crawl and the breaststroke
  2. Swim 20 yards, and return 20 yards with a 10 pound object in a time limit of 1 minute, 40 seconds.

To Be Successful:

  1. Attend all class sessions and participate with a positive attitude.
  2. Complete reading assignments and come prepared to class.
  3. Demonstrate competency in all required skills, activities, and final scenarios.
  4. Correctly answer 80% of the questions in each of the three sections of the final written exam.

Upon successful completion of course requirements, participants will be eligible to receive two American Red Cross Universal Certificates – (1) Lifeguarding/First Aid, which is valid for up to 3 years, and (2) CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, which is valid for 1 year.
